Services are offered for both children and adults
LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT
Language consists of two components: receptive and expressive language. Receptive language is one’s ability to understand and comprehend language. Expressive language is the ability to convey information or express oneself through words, gestures, or written communication. Examples of expressive language may include: naming objects, communicating wants and needs, asking questions, using appropriate pronouns, and formulating sentences to describe an event or object.
ARTICULATION ASSESSMENT
Articulation includes the way we say sounds in words. This is how we pronounce words. Sounds may be distorted, substituted, omitted or added in words making it difficult to understand. In this case, the child may understand and express language, but most people cannot understand what they are saying.
VOICE ASSESSMENT
Examining the voice includes collecting a speech sample focusing on the pitch, intensity, quality, resonance, prosody, vocal habits, and respiratory support for speech.
SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY
Therapy sessions consist of 30-minute intervals for children under 5 yo and 50-minute sessions for ages 5 yo and older. Therapy sessions focus on pre-determined goals set by the therapist, client, and/or caregiver. Sessions will sometimes include the family and/or caregiver.
VOICE THERAPY
Voice therapy is common for coaches, teachers, or extroverts who frequently use their voices. Over time, you may develop a harsh, hoarse vocal quality or even lose your voice, which is often due to vocal abuse and misuse. Voice therapy is vast and could include many other diagnoses. First, a diagnosis and/or referral from an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat, AKA Otolaryngologist doctor) is conducted. Voice therapy can help you use your voice properly to avoid further injury, surgery or being voiceless again. Therapy sessions are 45-minutes focusing on pre-determined goals set by the therapist, client, and/or caregiver. Most sessions will include the family and/or caregiver, unless otherwise deemed unnecessary.
PARENT COACHING
Including family in the process is the cornerstone of Together We Speak. The family or caregiver will be the primary communication partner, so it is important they are included in assessment and therapy sessions. When conducting assessments, the family and/or caregiver is involved in establishing communication goals appropriate for both the client and communication partner. This collaborative approach may include gathering communication needs through observations of daily routines and activities. Parent coaching is one of the most effective components of therapy, since the parent knows their child best. I believe in coaching parents on techniques to elicit and expand their child’s speech and language during daily routines and play activities.
BABBLE TO WORDS PARENT COACHING
These sessions include one-on-one coaching for parents who have a child who is babbling or using unintelligible jargon, but is not yet producing real words. I will teach you and your spouse techniques to elicit words, instead of just babbling, from your child. These are 30-minute sessions for you to better understand how to work with your child to stimulate language.
WORDS TO SENTENCES PARENT COACHING
These sessions include one-on-one coaching for parents who have a child who has limited vocabulary of words and is not yet speaking in sentences. I will teach you and your spouse how to expand on those words and increase your child’s language to ask questions, make comments and express him/herself through evidenced-based language stimulation techniques. These are 30-minute sessions for you to better understand your child and have more playful meaningful communication.
